ABOUT: Titus Coan

Titus Coan came to the Hawaiian Islands as a Christian Missionary and lived, labored among and loved the native population of the Islands from 1835 until his death in 1881. During his life there, he traveled thousands of miles on foot paths and braved many dangers to introduce his beloved Saviour to the Hawaiian people. In what is known as "the great awakening," many thousands of native Hawaiians were converted and Titus Coan became the pastor of what was likely the largest church gathering in the world at that time (12,000 at Hilo, Hawaii). When he died at 81, thousands mourned the death of their beloved pastor.

His two books and a biography by his second wife Lydia Bingham Coan are located at this library under "Main Menu - BOOKS" at the top of the page. It was the reading of his autobiography "Life In Hawaii" and his biography "Titus Coan - A Memorial" that inspired this Library Project.

You can read more about him including many quotes by him on this site at:

ABOUT: Titus Coan Memorial Library (TC-LIB)

This library is dedicated to gathering storing and making available online information and resources that tell the story of the Early Christian Missionaries who came and labored among the native and later foreign populations of the Kingdom of Hawaii. It will also be a source of Christian insight into the history of that nation.

It is our hope as an educational project that this library archive will benefit not only the current population of Hawaii but others around the world and leave an legacy of these things for generations to come. May it be as a gift to the churches and people of Hawaii and beyond and revive the Missionary Zeal that was once given to all...

ABOUT: The eBooks On This Site

The eBooks located on this site are almost without exception taken from scan copies of the original books held in University libraries. When we get them, they have been processed by OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software to extract the text from the images.

When we acquire them, they are FULL of OCR errors. Each page in each book has to be carefully compared line by line and page by page with the scans and errors (often thousands) corrected for readability and accuracy. It can take a minimum of 3-7 man-hour days to do this per book and 1-2 manhour days to HTML format them for the web and produce the various eBook editions for download.

There are currently 25 eBooks of restored text available on this website for FREE download. Feel free to download and share them with friends in their UNALTERED state. Website owners desiring to place them on their website should contact us first for permission.

Seventeen of the restored books are also available in PAPERBACK for a very reasonable price and sales help to support this website. [NOTE: They are at the parent website (Helps Communications)]

ABOUT: Quotes From The Great Awakening (1837-40)

The earliest missionaries arrived in 1820. They set the foundation for the mission for about 15 years. They learned the language fluently, established a written native language and schools, the first Hawaiian translation of the bible was complete and some of the natives and rulers had already come to know Christ. Then, in 1837 a powerful move of God began to sweep over the islands. Thousands were "saved."

"The scene was such as I had never before witnessed. I stood dumb in the midst of this weeping, wailing, praying multitude, not being able to make myself heard for about twenty minutes."
- [Titus Coan, Hilo - "Life In Hawaii" pg 50]

"Time swept on; the work deepened and widened, Thousands on thousands thronged the courts of the Lord. All eastern and southern Hawaii was like a sea in motion. Waimea, Hamakua, Kohala, Kona, and the other islands of the group, were moved...."
- [Titus Coan, Hilo - "Life In Hawaii" pg 48]

July 3, 1838. - "Sabbath was a glorious day here. I baptised and received seventeen hundred and five to this church. "
- [Titus Coan, Hilo - "Titus Coan A Memorial" pg 46]

Some of the congregations were immense. That at Ewa was about four thousand in number. Honolulu had two congregatious, one of two thousand five hundred, the other between three thousand and four thousand. At Wailuku the congregation was one thousand eight hundred; at Lahaina, it was generally two thousand; and at Hilo, it was estimated to number at times more than five thousand.
- [Rufus Anderson "History of the Mission" pg 144]
